AI in Law and Governance: Automating Legal Reasoning and Policy Decision-Making
Main Article Content
Abstract
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the domains of law and governance by automating complex legal reasoning tasks, enhancing policy decision-making processes, and enabling a more efficient, consistent, and accessible justice system. This paper provides a comprehensive examination of how AI technologies — including machine learning, natural language processing (NLP), and predictive analytics — are being integrated into legal research, contract analysis, judicial decision support, regulatory compliance, and public governance. Through a structured methodology combining systematic literature review, empirical case studies, and comparative performance analysis, this research evaluates the current state, efficacy, and ethical implications of AI-driven legal tools. Findings from prominent case studies, including the COMPAS recidivism prediction system and AI-assisted contract review platforms, indicate significant gains in efficiency and consistency, yet raise serious concerns regarding algorithmic bias, transparency, and accountability. The paper concludes by identifying critical challenges and outlining a forward-looking framework for responsible AI integration in legal and governance contexts.
